The National Debt Clock, invented by late real estate developer, Seymour Durst, is located on the side of a Durst Company buliding at 44th and Sixth.
This past year the debt had been rising steadily to a fourteen-digit number, bad news for a clock with room for only thirteen spaces. On September 30th, our national debt hit ten trillion dollars, and as a temporary measure, a "1" had to be slipped into the "$" spot and a "$" sticker had to be attached at the front.
In 2009, the clock will be updated with the addition of two more spaces, which we hopefully won't need--the updated model will have the ability, as this one does, to reverse itself and run backwards if the financial situation improves. We'll check in next October 12th.
