The M23 is no longer the slowest bus in the city. According to this year's study by the Straphangers Campaign, the slowest bus is the crosstown M96 which at noon on a weekday ran at only 3.7 mph.
They point out that the average pedestrian walks at 3 mph and that the average jogger would beat the bus. Then they say that a walking elephant would also move faster than the bus (4.5 mph) as would a running mouse (8 mph) and chicken (9 mph).
But I don't know if a chicken could keep that pace with a New Yorker standing on its back.
