1--Population Rank:  3rd (after California and Texas)

2--Area Rank:  27th (after Alaska, Texas, California...and twenty-three others)

3--Order of statehood:  11th (only two of the original thirteen colonies took a longer time to ratify the Constitution--North Carolina and Rhode Island)

4--Motto:  Excelsior (Ever Upward!)

5--Flower:  Rose  (That's right, the ROSE.  We're not screwing around here with black-eyed Susans or peonies like other states.  I'm looking at you, Maryland and Indiana.  We take pride in the rose, which also happens to be, as of 1986, our national flower; however, because of New York's Dutch origins, I would have pushed for the tulip.)

6--Bird:  Bluebird  (Again, one of the biggies.  We should probably have voted for the starling...but more on that in a later blog.)

9--This was the trick question.  New York has no official state sport.  Only seven states do:  South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming (rodeo); New Hampshire (skiing); Alaska (mushing...yep, mushing); Hawaii (surfing); and my favorite, Maryland (jousting).
