After a decade of construction, GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL opened on February 2, 1913. With sixty-six platforms and half a million people passing through every weekday, Grand Central is one of the largest and busiest train stations in the world. Here's what it looked like around the time it opened, before the construction of the Viaduct and the New York Central and Pan Am Buildings.
On February 2, 1653, NEW AMSTERDAM incorporated and became its own municipality. The first public works project for the incorporated entity was the wall (which later gave the street its name) built to protect New Amsterdam from New England during the first Anglo-Dutch War.
