New York has been the most populous city since the first census was taken in 1790 when our federal government was brand new and our city boasted only 33,131 residents.
Unless there's a major surprise in this year's census, New York will be the largest city in America for the twenty-third consecutive time.
Today's question: What is the only other American city that has appeared with New York in the Top Ten in every census from 1790 to 2000?
Answer after the jump.
PHILADELPHIA
Philadelphia was #2 in 1790 (the year the federal government moved there from New York) and would remain #2 in 1800, 1810, and 1820. It would bounce back to #2 in 1860 when its city and county consolidated and it wouldn't be bumped to #3 until 1890. Today, Philadelphia is America's fifth biggest city, though the 2010 census might give that distinction to Phoenix.
