This local island was known as Kioshk Island in 1600, Gull Island by 1630, Oyster or Little Oyster Island by 1680, Bucking Island by 1730, and Gibbet or Anderson Island (Anderson was a sailor hanged here from a gibbet) by 1765.

By 1780, it was known as Ellis's Island and later plain Ellis Island when the federal government purchased it and built Fort Gibson in 1814.
The island served as an ammo dump from 1835-1890.
In 1892, it began accepting immigrants.
Closed in 1954, it was abandoned and soon overgrown (click on the photo above).
In 1990, part of the island opened as a museum.
