Today, a fountain stands in the middle of Bowling Green, but what "first" was erected there in 1770 after the repeal of the Stamp Act?
(Hint: The black iron fence surrounding the park was put up to protect this in 1771.)
NEW YORK'S FIRST OUTDOOR SCULPTURE.
After the repeal of the Stamp Act, in gratitude to the king, a gilded lead statue of George III was placed in the middle of Bowling Green in 1770. Not all New Yorkers felt loyalty to the crown, however, and the fence was created to protect His Highness. The fence proved powerless in 1776 when the colonists, after reading the Declaration of Independence, stormed down Broadway and tore the statue down.
