BOTANICAL GARDEN
Dr. David Hosack (the doctor who attended Alexander Hamilton after his fatal duel) created the Elgin Botanical Garden, which was modeled on several he had seen while in England. Far too costly to maintain, the land was sold back to the state, which donated the garden to Columbia University.
Today's Channel Gardens, the strip of plantings that connect Fifth Avenue to the ice skating rink, serve as a tribute to Hosack's creation.
